Brown Announces State Grants for Lawrence County Community Projects

LAWRENCE COUNTY - Rep. Marla Brown (R-Lawrence) today announced more than $1.1 million in Local Share Account (LSA) grants have been approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) to support economic development, wastewater infrastructure, public safety communications and other critical community improvements across Lawrence County.

Local Share Account grants are funded through gaming revenues under Act 71 of 2004 and are used to support economic development, community improvement and other projects that enhance the quality of life for Pennsylvania residents.

“These projects represent the kind of investments that help Lawrence County move forward,” said Brown. “I’m proud to see state funding coming back to our communities to address long-standing needs and help position Lawrence County for continued growth and success.”

The approved Lawrence County projects include:

• Lawrence County Economic Development Corporation - $200,000 to redevelop the former R.E. Whittaker Roto Wash facility in New Castle City into an industrial site. The project will demolish approximately 19,000 square feet of deteriorated structures and construct a new 10,500-square-foot leasable industrial building, along with site utilities, stormwater improvements, parking and lighting. The site is expected to support approximately 10-15 businesses. LSA funds will be used for construction costs.
• Mahoning Township - $350,000 to upgrade equipment at the township’s wastewater treatment plant and pump stations. Improvements include installation of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, replacement of the wastewater treatment plant centrifuge, pump station duplex pumps and two speed reducers. The upgrades will improve monitoring, efficiency and reliability while reducing breakdowns and long-term operating and maintenance costs. LSA funds will be used for construction, equipment purchase and installation, and engineering costs.
• New Wilmington Borough - $114,267 to purchase new radios for the borough’s police department. The project includes eight portable radios, four mobile units for police vehicles, a base radio unit and a multi-band antenna to replace outdated equipment that is no longer supported by the manufacturer and cannot communicate with local college and neighboring county systems. LSA funds will be used for the purchase and installation of equipment.
• North Beaver Township Municipal Authority - $200,000 to construct new grinder pumps as part of an effort to address aging sewer infrastructure. The project will help prevent residential sewer backups, protect the environment and safeguard treatment facility equipment while providing a cost-effective, low-maintenance solution for challenging wastewater conditions. LSA funds will be used for site preparation, infrastructure and engineering costs.
• Taylor Township - $250,000 to upgrade the township’s sewage treatment plant. The project will address the age of the existing facility, improve solids handling, increase treatment capacity and resolve site-related issues through improvements outlined in the township’s updated Act 537 Plan. LSA funds will be used for infrastructure costs.

The Commonwealth Financing Authority is an independent agency responsible for administering state investments that promote economic growth, infrastructure development and community revitalization throughout Pennsylvania.
